CHAPTER TWELVE

BEEEEP! BEEEEP!

Who in the world had their finger stuck on the front-door buzzer?

Reese groaned. She rolled over and opened one eye. It was still dark out. What in the world? Her hazy gaze settled on the green numbers on the clock. It wasn’t even 6:00 a.m. She still had another half hour to sleep. Maybe they’d go away.

Beep. Beep. Beep.

Another groan formed deep in her dry throat. She wasn’t expecting anyone. Maybe one of the employees had forgotten their pass card. Wait. No one came in this early.

Well, she wouldn’t know what was going on until she answered the door.

She clambered out of bed and grabbed her old blue robe. Her elbow throbbed. There was no way the wrap on her arm would fit easily through the sleeve. Instead she draped the robe over her shoulder while holding her arm to her chest.

Her bare feet padded quietly across the floor. The door to Alex’s suite was just down the hall from hers. There were no sounds or light coming from his rooms. Lucky him. He was probably still enjoying a peaceful night’s sleep. Whatever had her out of bed at this hour had better be important.

She glanced through the window that ran down each side of the front door, finding Mr. Winston standing there. What in the world?

“Please come inside.” She held the door open for him. “What are you doing here at this hour?”

“I was up early, reading the paper while drinking my coffee, when I stumbled across something you need to see.”

“Couldn’t this have waited a few more hours?”

“No. In fact, I got here just in time.”

“In time for what?” She was thoroughly confused. She really needed a piping-hot cup of coffee to wash away the cobwebs in her mind.

“Read the headline.” He held the morning paper out to her. “It’ll explain everything.”

She accepted the paper and unfolded it. Her eyes immediately met a black-and-white photo of Alex. Her gaze skimmed the headline: Royal Prince Finds Love.

The breath caught in her throat as she read the words once more. Below the headline was a picture of her on the sidewalk with Alex next to her. Her mouth gaped. The photo had been taken last night.

She struggled to make sense of her rambling thoughts. This is why the man on the sidewalk had been questioning her? Alex was a prince?

How could that be true? Alex was royalty? Impossible.

Then their conversation at the restaurant came rushing back to her. She read the headline again. He had been telling her the truth. Alex was an honest-to-goodness prince.

“It’s true,” she said in astonishment.

“You know about this?” Mr. Winston’s gaze searched her face.

She hadn’t meant to say the words aloud. “He mentioned something about this last night.”

“Do you understand the trouble we’re going to have here?” The groundskeeper wrung his hands together. “I already had to escort two reporters off the property and close the gate. Thank goodness your mother isn’t here.”

It wasn’t just her mother who would not approve of the three-ring circus going on in front of the property.
